イスラム過激派組織「イスラム国」は、日本人2人を拘束したとしてインターネット上に映像を公開し、72時間以内に2億ドルの身代金を支払わなければ殺害すると脅迫している。
どの時点が72時間の起点なのか定かではないが、日本時間の金曜日がタイムリミットのようだ。日本国内でも緊迫感が高まってきており、いま一番の関心事だと言ってもいいだろう。
ついに日本人がテロの標的になったことの衝撃は大きいが、そうした分析は専門家に任せるとして、今回はイスラム国が公開した脅迫状とも言える動画での英語を見てみよう。覆面姿のイスラム国の戦闘員と思しき男がナイフを持って、イギリス訛りの英語で安倍首相および日本国民へのメッセージを伝えている。以下のとおりだ。
To the prime minister of Japan:
Although you are more than 8,500 kilometers away from the Islamic State, you willingly have volunteered to take part in this crusade. You have proudly donated $100 million to kill our women and children, to destroy the homes of the Muslims, So the life of this Japanese citizen will cost you $100 million. And in attempt to stop the expansion of the Islamic State you also donated another $100 million to train the Mortadeen against the Mujahideen. And so, the life of this Japanese citizen will cost you another $100 million.
And to the Japanese public:
Just as your government has made the foolish decision to pay $200 million to fight the Islamic State, you now have 72 hours to pressure your government in making a wise decision by paying the $200 million to save the lives of your citizens. Otherwise this knife will become your nightmare.
訛りはあるがゆっくり話しているので、比較的容易にディクテーションできる。一部、アラビア語からの借用語だろうか、Mortadeen と Mujahideenという語が馴染みがない程度だろうか。

こうした語を除けばデキる中学生でも読めそうな英文である。日本人相手だから簡単な英語でメッセージを作ったのかもしれないが、グローバル社会で役に立つ英語とはこういうものかもしれない。生きた英語教材として利用してもいいだろう。
