最近、オンラインのMacmillan Dictionaryをよく使っている。簡潔な説明が気にいっている。インタフェースも洗練されている。
この辞書には見出し語が赤文字になっている単語がある。これは、下のように頻出の7500語を表し、使用頻度に応じて星が付くのだが、赤文字の単語を知らないと結構ショックだ。
What are red words?
90% of the time, speakers of English use just 7,500 words in speech and writing. These words appear in red, and are graded with stars. One-star words are frequent, two-star words are more frequent, and three-star words are the most frequent.
例えば最近では、asylum, roar, sober などを意味はわからずに辞書を引いたのだが、自信がなくなるな。きちんとボキャブラに取り組まないとダメかな。
