米Amazon.comは、Kindle用のコンテンツをAppleのiPhoneおよびiPod touchで読める無料アプリケーション” Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch”を発表した（ニュースリリース）。
このアプリは、現時点では米国のiTune Storeでのみから入手できる。米国外のユーザは使用できるのかという疑問があるが、AmazonのFAQでは次のように答えている。最後のセンテンスをみると、少しは日本で利用できる望みががあるようだ。
Is Kindle for iPhone available to customers outside the United States?
At this time, we are unable to offer Kindle for iPhone and associated digital content from the Kindle Store to our international customers. Kindle for iPhone is currently only available for download from Apple's U.S. App store.
To successfully purchase digital content from Amazon.com, the 1-Click payment method listed on the Manage Your Kindle page must be a credit or debit card issued by a U.S. Bank with a U.S. billing address.
We value our international customers and hope to make Kindle for iPhone available internationally in the future.
先月「Kindle 2」が発売になったが、Kindle 2と、このiPhoneアプリと棲み分けはうまくいくのだろうか。Amazonとしては、コンテンツが売れればメディアは問わないということかもしれない。
最後に、実際にアプリが動いている様子を見てみる。まあリーダーとしては普通ですが、Nokia N82で使用しているmobipocketよりは、画面が広くてうらやましい。また現状では、iPhoneから直接Kindleのコンテンツをダウンロードすることはできないようだ。
